What is AQL and why is it important for disposable gloves?

When working with disposable gloves, you have undoubtedly come across the term and are probably already familiar with its meaning. In this article, we take a closer look at the Acceptable Quality Level (AQL) of disposable gloves.

What does AQL mean?

For disposable gloves, quality is directly linked to safety. That is why it is essential that gloves are free from defects, such as small holes (pinholes) that are often invisible to the naked eye. To monitor this, the AQL value is used. This value indicates the maximum number of gloves within a production batch that may contain a defect after all quality inspections have been completed. The AQL test therefore provides a reliable indication of product quality.

The lower the AQL value, the fewer defects are permitted within a batch. For disposable gloves, this means that the likelihood of small holes or other manufacturing defects is significantly reduced. A low AQL value therefore provides confidence in the quality, reliability and protection offered by the gloves.

How does an AQL test work?

To determine the AQL value of a batch of gloves, the size of the production batch is first established. This is the number of gloves produced under the same conditions during a single production run. Based on this batch size, the applicable standards determine how many gloves must be randomly selected for inspection.

During the test, each selected glove is filled with 1 litre of water. The opening is then sealed, and the glove is suspended upside down for two minutes. Afterward, the glove is inspected for leakage caused by small holes (pinholes) or other defects. This so-called water leak test is the globally recognized method for assessing the integrity and quality of protective gloves and forms the basis for determining the AQL value.

Which AQL value do I need?

The most suitable AQL value depends on the type of work being performed and the level of protection required.

An AQL of 2.5 is widely used worldwide for disposable examination gloves. This quality level offers a good balance between protection, comfort and cost efficiency and is suitable for a wide range of tasks in environments such as cleaning, maintenance and light industrial applications. However, when the consequences of a defective glove are greater, a stricter quality standard may be required.

When reliability is important, gloves with an AQL of 1.5 are often selected. This quality level is also applied to medical examination gloves in accordance with EN 455-1:2020+A1:2022. These gloves are subject to stricter requirements regarding water tightness and the probability of defects.

Gloves with an AQL of 1.0 are often chosen when reliability and consistent product quality are especially important. As a result, AQL 1.0 serves as an excellent intermediate step between the commonly used AQL 1.5 and the highly stringent AQL 0.65.

AQL 0.65 is among the strictest quality levels within the glove industry. This quality level is applied to products such as surgical gloves, where the barrier performance of the glove is of critical importance. Because of the very strict acceptance criteria, the likelihood of defects is reduced even further. Consequently, AQL 0.65 is often regarded as the highest standard for applications where maximum assurance is required.

AQL and standards: what is the difference?

For disposable gloves, both an AQL value and various standards are often specified. Although both provide information about the quality and performance of a glove, they serve different purposes.

An AQL value indicates how rigorously a production batch has been inspected for defects, such as holes or leaks. The lower the AQL value, the lower the probability of defects within the inspected batch. AQL is based on international sampling methods according to ISO 2859-1.

Standards indicate which risks a glove has been tested against and which performance requirements it meets. Examples include protection against chemicals, micro-organisms or medical applications.
